Day 7: Screencaps of Draenor, 1-90 Edition
Disclaimer: First, let’s address what happened to Day 4-6. I’m not even going to lie about this, I just chose not to do any writing. One of the difficulties with blogging is finding subjects worth writing about. I blogged sorta-kinda about 999, which had very recently been my game obsession of choice. I blogged about what I was hoping to accomplish with this blogging challenge. And then I sort of just ran out of steam. What was I even going to say?? I had no guides to write, like some of the other challengers. I do any of the RP-centric WoW activities like others do. And I am not nearly as creative as machinima makers, so writing about it seems weird to me. My method for the past many years has been to simply just not write anything at all. Take notes in my phone, in a draft blog post, or in a notebook, and then forget about it. So I just bailed on writing for a few days. I have no excuses other than I didn’t wanna.
I’m going to pick up the reigns and see if I can’t keep going. The point of the challenge was to get myself back into the habit of writing, good or bad. Kind of like a blogging Nanowrimo. Since I’ll likely not participate in Nanowrimo again in many, many years, this seems like a better option for me. Blog posts are quick and dirty. I don’t need people to read them, but it puts my words out there. I get the chance to say what I’d like and take part in the community in ways that are a little more, well, permanent compare to twitter. So that’s it then… onto the actual post part.
The Leveling of Alts
There’s always a point in every expansion where I end up not doing any raiding, or progression, and sort of just “wing it”. The inevitability of alt-leveling is kind of imminent. I know it’s going to happen, so I just wait until the mood strikes me and then it begins. I haven’t leveled an alt from 1 in a really long time. When I had a lot of free time, this was easy. I used to level alts from 1-90 in about 3.5 days. I generally take a specific leveling path, one in which I know all the quests, and go from there. Leveling has changed since MoP, and especially with the inclusion of all the heirloom changes, leveling will inevitably become a much easier event, even for those with limited amounts of time. I think that moment has arrived as I’ve done a lot more thinking about leveling of alts than I had in previous weeks.
The decision to level an alt from the 90-100 range or starting from scratch is rough. Especially now that my main sort of shifted from Alliance to Horde, where I have significantly fewer alts to choose from. I love both my Horde-Hestiah and my Alliance-Hestiah, but at a certain point, raiding is the only option for content. And let’s be perfectly clear, LFR isn’t really the best place to see raiding content. It’s still a cesspool of bad attitudes, offensive language, and epeen enthusiasts.
While leveling both Hestiah’s in those early days of Warlord’s dropping, I noticed just how beautiful the game was. The developers and artists really did a spectacular job with the game. Small details that often go unnoticed while people race to max level. I started sharing the screenshots on twitter, which inevitably became a tumblr set up to post a screenshot a day: Screenshots of Draenor exists, but I’m running out of screencaps to post. I think my queue is down to just a handful. I figured the more alts I leveled the more I’d see of the zones, the more screenshots I will grab. At a certain point, though, there’s nothing new to find. Not many people submit screenshots, even though I wish they would, since it would certainly mean that if there are pretty things, or amazing places I missed, people could still share them with others! At some point I also got a better computer and could turn up all the settings, so the screenshots, in general, just got better. And now with the S.E.L.F.I.E. camera, it seems there’s just a lot more potential for fun things!
I think it’s time to level an alt. From 1. I think this will be a fun experience to document the journey as I go and see if there are subtle changes I missed during the leveling process before since I was so caught up in hitting max level quickly. I promise you, I’ll keep blog posts here about various things of interest, but the screenshots will go on tumblr.
